Will Smith has stepped down and resigned from the Oscar Academy after slapping Chris Rock onstage out of anger. And he’s issued another statement to back up his resignation. The letter obtained by The Times on Friday reads:
“I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice; and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.
Moreover, Will Smith continues:
“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris; his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance; and global audiences at home,” Smith said. “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. And I am heartbroken.”
As a result of the slap incident; the Academy’s Board of Governors is set to meet on April 18; where it’s expected that some disciplinary action will be announced. To this end, this has been a long haul even though it just happened this week. Of course it’s still shocking and devastating. So much has taken place in so little time. And people are still questioning if the incident was even staged. It seems so out of touch.
The Academy Responds To Will Smith
Nontheless, Academy president David Rubin said in a statement; “We have received and accepted Mr. Will Smith’s immediate resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct; in advance of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18.”
LAPD says they were ready to arrest Smith after the incident, because for one, he would’nt leave after he was asked, and two, Chris Rock could have pressed charges and had him arrested. But Rock declined and said he ‘was o.k.’ Rock clearly dismissed those sentiments and wanted to move on although, according to insiders, he was clearly still very shocked at what took place.
