GAITHERSBURG- A 61 year old woman was hit by a trash truck and died while riding her bike Friday morning around 8:20 a.m. on South Frederick Ave. in Montgomery County MD. The unnamed cyclist was hit by a Potomac Disposal garbage truck; when the driver made a right turn heading westbound; police say.
From S. Westland Dr. onto northbound South Frederick Ave., the cyclist travelled on her bicycle. Simultaneously, the Maryland woman cycled west across the northbound lanes of south Frederick Ave. causing a fatal collision.
As for now, it’s unclear if she was riding on the pedestrian strip or on the side. However, after police and paramedics were called; she was transported to Shady Grove hospital. The woman suffered tragic injuries as she attempted to recover while in the hospital. However, she was later pronounced dead.
“The situation was handled correctly; and I’m certain that the investigation is an ongoing investigation”, Cassandra Durham of Montgomery County Police Department said. Continuing, “Once the investigation is concluded; then they will release further information”.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the crash. Moreover, police are requesting that anyone with information regarding the incident; contact detectives at 240-773-6620. Montgomery County has lots of places on various streets that could use lights to avoid these types of accidents.
Currently, there is no word if charges are being pressed against the garbage truck driver or the company. The woman’s name will remain anonymous; until all her family is notified.
