In the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Oklahoma Tulsa Massacre story has been called to mind by hundreds of thousands of people recently. With the merciless deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and a long list of others taking place this year, it’s made people of color go back down in history to see where it all began. To see where we could a grip, we made some calls to our ancestors to see where our strength derived in the midst of an ‘uncertain’ era.
Our ancestors brought us back to Tulsa Oklahoma, reminded us of our power, and the wealth we once had. However another peice of this rich legacy was uncovered in October at a Tulsa cemetery. There were 10 coffins found with a body in each. ABC is investigating.
The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre would kill 300 people during the riot, where whites stormed through the city burning down towns, schools, homes and churches, banks, hospitals…. all owned and built by Black people.
” What we were finding was an indication that we were inside a large area…a large hole that had been excavated and into which several individuals had been placed and buried in that location. This constitutes a mass grave”,said Oklahoma State archaeologist Kary Stackelback.
