The (former) police officer ( Derek Chauvins) who killed George Floyd by digging his knee in his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds has now been arrested and charged with 3rd degree murder and 2nd degree manslaughter. The DA announced charges Friday, stating that Chauvin is now in custody.
Complaint against Chauvins who killed George FloydHowever, the three other officers are not yet in custody, as they are still under investigation. No charges have yet been filed. The complaint states that an officer approached Floyd’s car ordering him out at gunpoint, claiming he used a forged check. When Floyd put his hands on the steering wheel, the officer pulled out his gun. The complaint says Floyd resisted arrest and once in hand cuffs, he became compliant according to the complaint.According to TMZ, the complaint is based, partly body cam videos reviewed by the Defense Attorney. The police officers told Floyd he was being arrested for the forged checks and proceeds to walk Floyd across the street to a squad car, where Floyd “stiffened up”, fell to the ground after telling the police officers that he was claustrophobic.At that point, according to the complaint, former officer Derek Chauvin arrives on scene in his squad car. Per the complaint, cops made several attempts to get Floyd back in the squad car, but he would not willingly go. According to the complaint, Floyd repeatedly said he could not breathe. This is before Chauvin put his knee on his neck.At 8:19 p.m., Chauvin pulled Floyd out of the squad car and he fell to the ground with handcuffs on. There are 2 other officers on Floyd’s back and legs as Chauvin at that moment dug his knee into Floyd’s neck.Floyd is repeatedly telling the officers, “I can’t breathe”, “Mama” and saying “please”. The officers responded to Floyd, “You are talking fine”. One of the other officers said, “Should we roll him on his side”? and Chauvin replied, “No, staying put where we got him”.Another officer said, “I am worried about excited delirium or whatever”. Chauvin said, “That’s why we have him on his stomach”.At 8:24 pm, Floyd stopped moving. At 8:25 pm he stopped breathing and speaking.
At this point, another officer checks Floyd’s wrist for a pulse and says, “I couldn’t find one.” None of the offcers moved from their position. At 8:27 Chauvin finally removed his knee. In all, Chauvin has his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes, and 46 seconds, while 2 minutes, 53 seconds of that was after George had stopped breathing and speaking.The autopsy says Floyd had underlying medical conditions, including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease. The Medical Examiner said, “The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.” These are preliminary findings pending toxicology tests.
According to WFSB, George and Chauvins worked interchangeably at a bar as bouncers.
The 3rd degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years.
